چکیده

We introduce the idea of delegation in distributed tree-search, as a method to reduce the communication overhead when solving Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems (DisCSPs). With delegation, an agent can eliminate some direct forward links to child neighbours and choose intermediaries for communicating with such children. We present an algorithm which constructs long delegation paths automatically, and we prove that given certain assumptions it does not decrease privacy. We show experimentally that delegation can reduce messages by 50% for hard problems, although at the expense of more constraint checks.

Distributed search in railway scheduling problems

Many problems of theoretical and practical interest can be formulated as Constraint Satisfaction Problems (CSPs). Solving a general CSP is known to be NP-complete; however, distributed models may take advantage of dividing the problem into a set of simpler interconnected sub-problems which can be more easily solved. The purpose of this paper is threefold: first, we present a technique to distri...

A Hybrid Solving Scheme for Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems

Algorithms for Distributed Constraint Satisfaction Problems fall into two categories: distributed complete search (DisCS) and distributed local search (DisLS). The advantage of DisCS is that it guarantees to find a solution or proves problem infeasibility. DisCS is good at solving tight problems with complex constraints, but suffers from false commitments early in the search tree, leading to ex...

A Distributed Algorithm Solving CSPs with a Low Communication Cost

We present a new distributed algorithm which finds all solutions of Constraint Satisfaction Problems. Based on the Backtrack algorithm, it spreads subtrees of the search tree over processes running in parallel. The work is equitably shared among the processes while the communication cost remains low. We show that the speedup of the resolution is asymptotically linear as the number of variables ...

Boosting Distributed Constraint Satisfaction

Competition and cooperation can boost the performance of search. Both can be implemented with a portfolio of algorithms which run in parallel, give hints to each other and compete for being the first to finish and deliver the solution. In this paper we present a new generic framework for the application of algorithms for distributed constraint satisfaction which makes use of both cooperation an...
